215 asasinz

the 215 asasinz- a six person rap group from philly including members such as kenny lee (r.i.p.), patrice taylor, wade staton, james woodrit, izzim spicer, eric aka etc. and kenneth lee owens. i think this is their only release. put out in '95 on no cross records.

"This single received major airplay in the Philadelphia and South Jersey area. The single topped number 1 on Power 99’s Radio Active countdown and number 3 on the Urban Ground magazine top ten Hit list. This Recognition helped to nominate 215 asasinz for “Da Buzz Awards” not to mention the sale of close to 15,000 units in ‘mom and pop’ stores in the philly, South Jersey and Delaware area alone."

i guess the lp they were working on never got completed as several members of the group obviously moved out of Philadelphia to go to college and for job opportunities.

brother arthur keeps it real you suckers

this is going to be short today...the reason is i do not have a lot info on this one. heard it on a premier mix first, doubled my listening pleasure with a mix of hiphop's vinyl heaven internet radio and then hunted it down. brother arthur's 12" is a piece of wax i would never let go. co-produced by chuck chill out it should have seen the light of day in '94 on the c-ya entertainment label.

the famous line "such a pitty, that livin in the city is like livin in the times of frank nitti" had been used for the chorus of group home's "up against the wall" in '95. another hint, that the record should be from '94.

i agree with the phrase etched into the run out groove of this record
- keeping it real you suckers

again, i'm looking forward to any additional info on this group/release!

nipskcab

when i got the nipskcab ep from my man tobi, i first thought "nipskcab- what a weird name". but then i had a closer look at the label. there were two producers noted: "backspin and the vibe chemist". so the name was now clear to me; backspin backwards. then i dug out my nitty gritty 12" to see that mr. backspin was credited there as producer as well. but this time he had an alias which was "the vibe chemist". so my guess is the label of the nipsckab fam ep is wrong. it's just one person. apparently backspin already produced for leaders of the new school in '91 and afterwards for the solo project of busta and also for rampage.

i'm not sure about this but i think the nipskcab fam consists of backspin (whose real name is marlon king), publik anounsa, hycelph da supreme child and maybe the mc featured on the nitty gritty record, whose name i don't know. i'm pretty sure they're from brooklyn.

backspin was involved in productions for one or probably both publik anounsa 12inches as well. unfortunately i sold my copy of the '95 release "comin' from crooklyn jointz" last year and didn't save a scan on my computer before. but i have a decent rip from back then and also found the ebaypicture at least. in '96 or '97 publik anounsa and hycelph da supreme child had a very nice split 12". i'm still looking for that one.

you got additional info to share? corrections? please use the comments section, thanks!

the slum brothers

"reggie reg, my style is mad fat,
plus i can make denzel look like craig mack,

i'm all that, when i rap to basslines and fat tracks,

the ni**ers are wack they need to step the f**k back"
yeah it's the slum brothers! nowadays most indy heads are aware of this crew from jersey with mc reggie reg aka reginald dempsey and his characteristical rhymestyle. unfortunately i once again do not have much background info on this crew.

interesting thing; besides the three releases most people heard of, there are three more records related to them. the first one is a 2nd press of the '96 12" stop fronting. this came out two years later in '98 on scientific recordings, which already released fool's paradise. note that the sides are switched on the rerelease.

then, there are two more releases by an mc reggie reg. apparently this guy is from jersey as well but somehow he has a different rhymestyle than the reggie reg we knew from the slum brothers. i only got the one release of the two and can't say i'm 100% sure that this is the same guy. i think that's lakim shabazz mentioned on the label as producer for "nj connection".

all things considered, i still stick to "regular niggers". i love that track since the day i first heard it.

m.i.c. and dj cutt

in 1996 vestry records dropped an underground bomb! m.i.c. and dj cutt aka constant deviants released their debut record called "competition catch speed knots"; a heavy bassline and a strong voice stuck together perfectly.

one year later, the two artists showed up with another name and additional mc's. as global platoon they released another 12" on launchpad records. two brand new tracks including the dope cut "crew family".

nevertheless, m.i.c. and dj cutt got back together in '98 to drop two more singles as constant deviants ("can't stop" and "8th wonder").

i'm not sure what they are up to nowadays...please use the comments section if you know more.

GLOBAL PLATOON 12" '97

note: since my man ed gave me the hint...i checked the flipside of the global platoon record for fla-fla from sparrow, and indeed, it has to be him. check the labelscan below, there are additional mc's listed and one of them is fla. but it says "j. givens" which is wrong. it should be j.giddins. anyway, thanks ed for dropping your knowledge in here, really appreciated.

q ball & curt cazal

another couple, who doesn't need a big introduction! q ball and curt cazal, who was dj and producer of j.v.c. force (justified by virtue of creativity for all reasons concerning entertainment) from around '87-'92.

both together started their journey in '94 on vzq records with a 12" called "makin moves" to follow up one year later on the same label with "my kinda moves". in '96 they released a 12" called "tremendous" and one year later "unstoppable" both with mama mystique. their white label with "rock the spot" and "live & let die" should be from '98. the last two joints i want to show you are a collaboration with rae & christian from the uk and the track "boon dox" which was featured on a mystic brew sampler.

qnc are presently working with names like jay z, m.o.p., sauce money, boot camp clik, keith murray, mr. cheeks, big daddy kane, craig g, krumbsnatcha, afu ra, big jaz, etc....

update:

i asked aj rok about q-ball:

"...Q Ball was a cat that went to high school with Curt Cazal and B Luv (Im a little older) and started hanging with Curt more as JVC FORCE was in the process of breaking up. Q Ball may even be on a track on the 3rd album that was goin to come out on Big Beat and was never released, Im not quite sure but NO Q BALL WAS NEVER A MEMBER OF JVC FORCE.
Curt and him kinda did their thing after JVC FORCE broke up!"

these are the dayz

up next is a record i always used to skip at recordspots while diggin' around...somehow i never got attracted to its label or i thought it was wack...anyway...after a few years of ignoring i finally had a closer listen to it. the result was astonishing; i liked it within seconds and even bought doubles! reason enough to post it up here.

we're talking about a combo consisting of dj stitches and mc rhyme va-lore. where are they from? what year was it released? did they put out anything else than this 12"? i have no clue. all i know is it came out on waxwerks entertainment. i have to guess again about the year..i'd say '97/'98..

both tracks are dope..."top mc" is the winner tho!
