the realist

from the depths of wyoming, michigian i present you the realist. i read pit records must have released this ep around '94, but i'm not sure. could also been a few years later.

the gimme love ep features five tracks. once again it's hard to find any info about these cats, but you get two mc's along with d.j. shonski rockin' the joints. pretty mellow shit right here..sounds like a mix of the nonce, mass influence, tribe, pharcyde...check it out!

gemini

what up folks! as promised i'm back with some freshnessss!

first of all- thanks for all the positive feedback over the last two years, let's see how far we can get. please do not just consume...contribute!

to start off the new season, i have chosen a record from the early nineties. it's gemini from nyc (jamaica queens i believe). i have to admit, lately i've been having some problems with background stories. same goes for this 12". all i can say that the "super g" single comes with the original mix and a remix by k swift. it had been released in '94 on pauls place entertainment.

i can not decide which version i prefer. right now i stick more to the rugged original version, which by the way is produced by gemini himself.

oh yeah, this has nothing to do with jemini da gifted one by the way.

GEMINI 12" '94

1. SUPER G
2. SUPER G (K SWIFT REMIX)

rakim allah / 2 years crates of ag / competition

first of all, 2 years crates of ag and no one even noticed...shame on you!!

since i love exclusive white labels/ bootlegs i will dedicate this post to a veteran in the game, rakim allah. there are plenty of unofficial records out there by the master, but i came to choose two of mines.

i once knew more about the background of these recordings but i can't recall it right now. you get eleven tracks of best material, probably not officially released due to sample clearance problems or lack of interest. the first ep should be from around '95/'96 and also exists with a green label. i don't know which pressing came first.

pretty, pretty, pretty dope shit right here, be sure to check this out!

RAKIM "UNRELEASED STUDIO SET" '9x

1. REMEMBER THAT
2. LAST RESORT
3. LIVIN FOR THE CITY
4. I GET VISUAL
5. SHADES OF BLACK REMIX

RAKIM "UNRELEASED SHIT" '96

1. REMEMBER DAT
2. ONCE UPON A RHYME
3. PAID OFF
4. HOW I'M LIVIN'
5. TRYIN' TA WRITE RHYMES
6. BRING IT ON

as mentioned before crates of ag stepped into its 3rd year of existence. as gift i have 1 brand new freestyle professors shirt (Size: XL) to give away.

how you can win this?

well, since halloween is about to happen:

make a picture of yours or a friend of yours. on that picture you stand on your right foot (left one is in the air). you have to hold an 80% peeled banana with your left hand and a record with your right. you have to wear a hat, bandana or wig. in your mouth there has to be a cigar or anything similar.

send the picture to cratesofag at hispeed dot com and win the shirt.

us plus one

us plus one on crates of ag this weekend.

in 1994 swirl wind recordings dropped the debut 12" by a crew out of bushwick (i believe) called us plus one. on the "dear jenny" recording you'll find three tracks with productions by gordon ancis & true da grynch of the evil twins.

one year later the same label dropped the follow up. "gettin lyrical" & "poets get lyrical" again were produced by true da grynch. but this time there were scratches by mister tony touch.

another year passed and in 1996 the (to my knowledge) last record "murder me" got released.

in '97 swirl wind dropped a 12" by tony tone. these are the only four records i know by this label.

there's not much more i know about these cats- help a brother out!

overdose

pretty unknown release to me from south boston, which kross fade records put out in '93. the group goes by the name of overdose. on "booty kall" you get featurings by sandman & hardcore. you will recognize the sample used in "countin' em up" which had been used by half-a-mil a year later. i stick to half-a-mil's version but i also like the funky flute used in this one. also i like how they flipped the sample in "booty kall" (famous break- but i can't name the title right now). nothing groundbreaking here, but worth a shot.

OVERDOSE 12" '93

1. BOOTY KALL (FEAT. SANDMAN & HARDCORE)

widow prizum

big update on this rainy tuesday

i'm sure some of you already noticed the releases on psycho v records from brooklyn. one of the main acts is a crew called widow prizum, which consists of cosmic ray (also member of alien nation) and his cousin ikiea. they grew up in the marcy projects of brooklyn.

i want to focus on the first three releases they put out (at least i think they are the first ones).

alongside with the widow prizum crew you'll also find the b.o.d. click (money bazz, mr. jig, dj wick) and a french mc called k-pee on these records. the french connection went on as they released a full length cd called "a brooklyn kind of life" in '01 recorded in france.

spectrum live

i was disappointed when i listened to this 12" for the first time. somehow it didn't hit my taste back then. but a few months later, i dug it out again and suddenly felt differently about it. now i really like two tracks on this one- especially the original mix of "50 grand" with its dark and heavy vibe. but "stay true" is good as well and constantly growing on me.

again, not enough info about this crew. released in '97 and produced by eleet. that's all i have right now.

SPECTRUM LIVE 12" '97

1. 50 GRAND RMX
2. 50 GRAND OG
3. STAY TRUE
