cipher

this group is a little treasure from vancouver, canada. they had their debut 12" "peeps" in '95 on mocca recording group, were featured on the bomb hip hop compilation from '97 with the joint "dues" and dropped their full length "360°" one year later on bomb as well. i have to say, the lp is so damn slept on (and still available on the webpage), while the 12" is harder to get nowadays.

here's what bomb hip-hop writes:

"Vancouver-based Cipher breathes new life into a hip-hop world run-down by repetitive styles, and played-out gimmicks. The duo, consisting of Clean (producer/engineer) and G² (lyricist/DJ), have been cutting tracks together since 1991. Clean and G² first hooked up during some late night studio sessions in Boston, where the two we attending college to study music. After obtaining his degree from Boston's world-renowned Berklee College of Music, Clean established his own production company and fully equipped 24-track studio in Vancouver and the two continued to work on their material. Cipher's independent debut single & video 'Peeps' released in 1995 proved that the combination of G²'s fierce lyrics and Clean's manipulation behind the boards would be successful. The video for 'Peeps' landed the #2 position on MuchMusic's RAP CITY and the record received plenty of airplay on Canada's Radio Hip-Hop Shows. The group has never taken shortcuts in creating it's music, and the full length album 360° is proof of this. Containing a total of 16 tracks the album features guest appearances by several members of the Cipher family including; Sleep, Natural Skills, Pele Stoane, Precise and XL."

the standout tracks: "how it go", "ill shit" and the whole 12". should anyone have their "peeps" video somewhere please let me know. i'd love to see that!

this is my review i posted from amazon almost 2 years ago,''i first heard of this group on the fuse channel much music on a show called rap city not the one with mad linx this show actually showed old school rare hard to find videos. then one night they showed a video for their single how it go. hot single the beat is dark so is the video.for some reason they don't show rap city no more, don't know why maybe ratings weren't good. but any ways 16 tracks, the beats on these songs are very dark and head nodding.my only complaint is that its 34 minutes long.should've been promoted better. this is my first canadian hip hop purchase and its actually good. if u like dark beats and like to play hip hop that fits the nightlife then this is your album, i hope this helps. support real hip hop.''
